Strategies for Engaging Employees

1. Benchmark your organization’s level of employee engagement and set targets for improvement.
   
   
2. Make it a priority to understand the relationship between antecedents, behaviours, consequences and engagement.
   
   
3. Pinpoint specific business issues or goals and then identify the behaviours that either contribute to goal realization or detract from them.
   
   
4. Make sure every single one of your managers and supervisors have been trained and equipped with solid coaching, mentoring, communication and feedback-giving skills.
   
   
5. Attend to both content and context issues.  In other words, the strategy, how it is communicated and the perception of employees about leaders. 
   
   
6. Hold managers and front-line supervisors accountable by measuring and rewarding their ability to attract, engage and retain employees.  Make this evaluation a key component of their performance appraisal process.  What gets measured gets done!  Reward, handsomely, those that meet and exceed the established goals and targets.
   
   
7. Find ways to provide many high-involvement activities.
   
   
8. Emphasis work/life balance; particularly for women employees and all employees under age 35 – this groups ranks it as the number one job-satisfaction factor.
   
   
9. Focus your attention where change really occurs.
   
   
10. Create comfortable spaces for employees to connect.
    
    
11. Tell stories that reinforce connections.
    
    
12. Develop non-work profiles in addition to work profiles that truly demonstrate an understanding of each employee as an individual contributor.
    
    
13. Give spot awards.
    
    
14. Give “Thank-you Grams'.
    
    
15. Eliminate non-performers.
